Examples of understanding the system

Example 1: System Mapping Workshop
At one coastal site, stakeholders participated in an interactive workshop using large printed maps and colored markers to trace key activities, such as aquaculture, shipping, and recreation. The exercise revealed zones of overlapping pressure and identified an estuary segment where habitat restoration could yield multiple benefits.

Example 2: DPSIR Analysis for Coastal Erosion
A regional Living Lab applied the DPSIR framework to understand erosion dynamics. The analysis showed that urban expansion (driver) and poor drainage (pressure) led to sediment imbalance (state change), threatening property and biodiversity (impact). A new coastal management plan (response) was designed to address these findings.

Example 3: Ecosystem Service Assessment
Researchers and community members jointly assessed the value of wetlands in flood mitigation and carbon sequestration. The results helped the local council justify investment in wetland restoration as part of a long-term coastal protection strategy.
